There seems to be a BTCC 406 besides it. I remember seeing some other 90's BTCC racer (maybe a Mondeo?) for sale in NZ too. Those things are far away from home.

Yup. There’s a clutch of BTCC S upertourers here today: the 406, a couple of Mondeos, a Primera and a Volvo - S90 not the lenendary wagon :-(.

Nice! TWR used Volvo 850 estates and saloon s but got their first championship winner with an S40. All were powered by heavily modified inline 5 engi nes . So they should all sound awesome!

They do. But given that there’s also a Group A XJS, a Group C 635, Group C and JTCC RX7s and a Maclaren M8 here, they’re not really in the running sound wise.
I do love the engineering extremes of BTCC cars though - just how low and far back can you stuff in a “standard” engine bay? I seem to recall there’s a bit of a story about the heads on those Volvo s, too: machined from billet to keep all the measured bits stock dimensions and everything else modified as hell, or something like that.

Sounds like a nice event indeed.
TWR did a lot of machin ing for the head but it wasn’t made of a billet piece. The rules required a production car head to be used with a production car block (they could be sourced from diffe rent engines though) . The stock Volvo 20V head had a problem for natural aspirated racing use. There just isn’t enough room for camshaft lobes or lifters that would provide enough lift get desired amount of power.
The regulations did require a stock head blank to be used but they didn’t say anything about machining the whole camshaft section off and bolting a separate piece on top of the block. And t hat’s just what TWR guys did. They also machined the block deck angled so that they could install the head slightly tilted. This enabled bet te r angle for the intake runners.
In some inter view the TWR guys said that the extra machin ing work cost +£10k/engine com pa red to a £200 blank that could have easily made at the Volvo plant.

That’s the one. I knew I remembered something about the heads. A lesson in what happens when you try to control costs in a series involving works teams....
